Elisabeth "Lizzie" Armstrong Magee
(alternate spellings found: Elizabeth) This lovely lady born 15 August 1852 at Coxton(Coxtown), near Bridgetown, Ireland to William Armstrong & Anne Beatty. According to the 1900 US Census, Elisabeth MARRIED an American, Edward Carre-Magee in 1877. (See other photos below). *The same census indicates Year of Immigration as 1885. (If you have additional information, photographs, or documents, PLEASE SHARE). |
Edward Carre was born in PA. in 1848, soon of Edward Penn Carre and Sarah Gampher Penn Carre of Philadelphia. Edward senior died when Edward, his son, was about 13. His mother remarried a Mr. William Magee of Donegal Ireland, who had settled in Philadelphia sometime in the mid 19th century. Mr. Magee was a wealthy business man and part of the larger Magee sept in Donegal (the Magees are the famous weavers of Northern Ireland). In order to gain social acceptance into Philadelphia society he married the widow of Edward Penn Carre and adopted her son.
The name was hypenated. Carre-Magee, and Elisabeth and all the children carried a hyphenated name. William Magee sent his adopted son to Ireland to manage the Magee mills of which there were many, and the family lived at one-Millview House. The Edward Carre-Magee family returned to Philadelphia around 1887/89.The "boys" dropped the hyphen. |

Elisabeth Armstrong and Edward Carre-Magee made their home in Millview, which is actually part of Bridgetown (this might have been Coxtown). Their four boys were all born there, the two girls were born in Philadelphia when they returned to USA. (**Line 22 of the 1900 US Census in Philadelphia Pa. gives the address as 1307 Molt Street). Their home is called Millview House, it is a mid-19th century house situated on land that is boarded by a black water river, and about a 10 minute drive to Rossnowlagh Beach. It's still there today with a large mill ruin adjacent to the home and workers cottages beyond.
Today, descendants of Elisabeth Armstrong and Edward Carre-Magee still live in the Washington, DC area. Thanks to Cousin Virginia and her brother James for contributing thia information.
