Waka Huia features Parengamihi Gardiner of Tauranga New Zealand
Many thanks to those of you who posted a "heads up' on Facebook of the Waka HuiaTV broadcast that recently aired featuring Parengamihi Gardiner daughter of Hori Harawira, granddaughter of Isabella Ihipera Armstrong & Pakaka Waaka, great granddaughter of William Armstrong Jr. & Karorina Tikipoti.
If you haven't seen it yet, here's a Youtube link for your viewing pleasure.
A few of the highlights that stand out in my mind include the information of how her father enlisted in the army, his involvement in training soldiers who came to the Marae, & the details leading up to his death. She also had a photo of Hori Harawira, the first I've ever seen! She also had a photo-shopped photo of the descendants of Hohepa Harawira & Isabella Ihipera Armstrong which now included two previously unseen siblings!
The three surviving daughters of Hori Harawira are Ihipera Queenie Palmer, Mihi Gardiner, & Ary McLeod.
"My grandmother (Isabella Armstrong) came from Tanui to Tauranga in search of her mother (Karorina) & brought my father (Hori) with her. She stayed here & married Hohepa Harawira who we called our grandfather. He brought up our father."
"My father's name was Hori Harawira (1903-1945).... My mother's name was Te Wehipoti Ririnui (1900-1956) & she was from here. (Tauranga) " Parengamihi was brought up at Whetu Marae by an elderly woman...
"During World War I, our father was about years old but he liedabout his age so he could join the army....
During WWII, soldiers slept on the marae and my father taught how to march.... I remember that.
One day, he collapsed & was taken to the hospital. There was blood coming out of his mouth Three years he was in hospital & then he died."
"There were eight of us.. three remain. One just passed away recently. (Ani Te Tuhi)
Ihipera is the eldest, Iwingaro is the middle child, & then there's me. I was raised at Wairini Marae..."
Happy 80th Birthday cousin Parengamihi!
