We know very little about William's sister Elizabeth and her life so this small piece of information helps us see where she was living in 1894 following the death of her father William in 1874 & her mother Anne in 1891. The next question is, "Was she married & did she have children also living there with her? Isabella would have been 47 years old. All her siblings would have either died, married, or moved away by that time leaving her the only immediate member of the family remaining in the area. More information to follow!
I came across some additional information on the home of William Armstrong & Anne Beatty. Although it goes into great detail about the property, I'm most interested to discover that it was later the home of Isabella Armstrong. Read what this Building Survey report says: "The associated mill was possibly originally built at the expense of the Hamilton family of nearby Coxtown Manor (see 40909913) who built and ran mills somewhere around this area c. 1840 (record of Hamilton, Alexander and Andrew, Millers, Coxtown Mills, in 1846). Griffith's Valuation of 1857 records that a William Armstrong was the miller here at this time, when the holding was described as consisting of a 'house and land, flour mill, house, office and yard' with a rateable value of £98 and 10s, and a 'house, corn mill and kiln' with a rateable value of £38 and 15s. This house was probably later the home of an Isabella Armstrong (Mill View House, Bridgetown) in 1894 (Slater's Directory). This unusual building forms part of a group of related structures along with the adjacent mill, and is a modest addition to the built heritage and social history of the local area."

I've been looking for birth information for Wm. Armstrong Sr. We know that his name is also William Armstrong. The last two weeks I've been looking at a possible Birth Record match: William Armstrong Born: 18 April 1819 @ Clones, Moneghan with Father: William Armstrong & Mother: Elizabeth Campbell.
We know that William had a sister named Elizabeth & it was tradition to name children after their parents, just as William was named after his father. We also know that Clones is only 15 miles from FivemileTown. 1.) If I can find a surviving Census record for 1821, we might identify other members of the family, which would hopefully include William's brother, John Armstrong. 2.) If we could find William Armstrong Sr.'s father's Will, he should name all the members of the family and hopefully mention Mill house by name. 3.) If we could identify John Armstrong's burial site, his headstone may include the name of his parents as well as his wife & other members of the family. A discovering of any of these sources would help to confirm or reject my current theory. We should have some extra time later this week over Thanksgiving to do some more digging! HAPPY THANKSGIVING WEEK! Leading up to the recent Armstrong Reunion in New Zealand, I had been looking hard for new possible leads for Wm Armstrong Sr.'s parents & siblings in Ireland Now its time to look at the other side of the family, the Beatty's.
In the last month, I've added two new pages to our site as I've expanded my studies into new research. Irish Resources & Websites is exactly what it sounds like. Among all the web browsing I've been doing, these are some of the best "hot spots". These focus primarily on Armstrong & Beatty families but also include many other Irish families. Beatty Resources is still relatively new but still contains great info. We actually received our first inquiry last week from a Beatty family member who has been tracing his Family History in Fermanagh, Ireland through a DNA Project. We are excited to hear from Preston & hope to assist one another in bringing our information together. In October, I also started creating a Google Map of Armstrong & Beatty families across Ireland & Scotland. My hope is that we'll be able to identify record sources based on family movement. Once completed, you'll be able to click on the map to view family info. dates, & place names as well as the source of our information. I've already come to understand a great deal more about why family members are buried where they are based on where they lived. I also have new theories that the Beatty & Armstrong families were also greatly involved as "Flax Growers"which may be how the two families first met! Further documentation is required to confirm this idea but we'll keep everyone posted. Rumors are that a trip to Ireland may be in the works for next year! That's right, a group of our Armstrong descendants from New Zealand are discussing the possibilities following the recent Armstrong Reunion. I'm hopeful we can all come together to connect a few missing dots before then. If you have new info, I'd love to hear from you! **Check back soon for new updates! |
