William Armstrong (Jr.)Our William Armstrong, Jr. was BORN July 10th, 1850 at Coxtown, Donegal, Ireland to William Armstrong, Sr. and Anne Beatty.
EMIGRATED TO NEW ZEALAND: In 2010, a hand written note was discovered written inside the back of an old Armstrong family Bible in the UK which reads: "William Armstrong Jr. left Mill View for Australia March 24th,1873, onto New Zealand." From "The Armstrong Reunion Book of 1984" (see tool bar - currently listed under Reunion News!) we learn the following information about William's life and family: William Armstrong came to New Zealand from Ireland when he was about 25 years of age and participated in the Gold Rush at Thames and Ohinemure. He spent many years prospecting and was employed for a long period by the Kauri Timber Co. at Thames. |
While still in Ireland. William belonged to the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Ireland; being a member of the ancient lodge No. 558 Donegal County Donegal. He was registered as a Master Mason 11 March 1873 in the Registry of the Grand Lodge of Ireland and raised to the degree of Mark Master Mason 21 March 1873 in the Royal Arch Chapter No. 558 Donegal of the Lodge of Mark Master Masons. http://www.irish-freemasons.org/Pages_GL/GL_introduction.html
From a letter William's sister Annie wrote to him on March 26th, 1903 we learn:
*Annie (Armstrong) & James McKinney was living at 72 Bedford Street, North Liverpool.
*Their children where Albert, the eldest son who was a curate near London, William, who was a master in a boy's school near Bath, Charlie who was in Yorkshire with a view to be ordained, Annie Violet who was 18 years old.
*James McKinney had a brother Andrew McKinney living in New Zealand.
*William's mother was a Beatty. Reference was made to an uncle James Beatty & Uncle John Beatty, the latter having died in 1902 over 80 years old.
*William had a brother named Mervyn & sister named Bella, Lizzie, & Georgina. Lizzie & Georgina had moved to America.
I used the information from Annie's letter in 2003 to post an inquiry in my search for William's parents.
It was this letter that helped bring about a miracle:
***Read my account of this miraculous experience, "Never Give Up on Family History!"
*Before you ask, we don't know what has become of this letter over the years. Someone has it and we anticipate their willingness to share.
